I’ve been working in tech since 1997, starting in UX research and design, moving into digital service and strategic design and latterly product management and strategy. I’ve worked in mobile since that meant designing WAP sites for the Nokia 7110, and quickly embraced the challenges of cross-platform and ubiquitous user experiences. I first became involved in IoT while head of research for design consultancy Fjord, where I led Fjord’s involvement in Smarcos, an EU-funded R&D consortium investigating the interusability of interconnected embedded devices (that’s a mouthful, but essentially it’s the UX of IoT). In 2012 I joined AlertMe, a connected home platform provider subsequently acquired by British Gas, as product manager for service design. There I began to learn the nuts and bolts of delivering real-world IoT products and discovered a passion for energy tech. I led the design of the 2nd generation Remote Heating Control (the predecessor to Hive) and the first generation Smart Energy Report, the UK’s first consumer smart meter report. I launched my own consultancy in 2014, and published my book in 2015. I’m a frequent speaker on the international conference circuit. These days, I’m particularly interested in challenges in consumer energy management and demand response, and balancing the power grid in ways that work for mainstream consumers.
